Three Ways to Level Up Your Eco-Friendly Game

Psalm 24: 1 says, "The earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it, the world, and all who live in it." As Earth Day approaches, I am reminded of the privilege I have to worship the Creator and enjoy the fruits of this beautiful earth that God has created.

It's safe to say that these days, most of us try to make conscious choices about how we can take care of our planet. We have different levels of commitment and a range of perspectives on this topic. Recently I heard that some states have or are moving toward passing legislation to ban plastic grocery bags at checkouts. Now, I am not here to debate or politicize the issue, just to recognize that there are many positions and perspectives. But it did get me thinking just how I could make more eco-friendlier choices. While some live a completely eco-friendly life, others are beginning to explore what it means to be incorporate sustainability practices, and still, others fall somewhere in between. Equally if not more important is how and where do we even begin? Remember when recycling trash was a new concept? Receptacles for separating paper, plastic, and garbage are now commonplace not only in commercial establishments but also in our homes.

So you may be asking, that sounds fine but what can I do now to make a difference. Great question. I asked myself a similar question. What one step can I take to become more eco-friendly. Even if we level up in just one area, it's making an impact overall.

If you're like most folks, making weekly visits to the grocery store or your local farmers market is the norm.  Even during this COVID-19 pandemic, grocery shopping remains a necessity. Unless you're using a meal delivery service or having groceries delivered, you along with millions of others have experienced the dreaded moment of unloading all the plastic bags full of groceries out of the car (or off the bus) and into the house. If you're fortunate to engage an army of littles to share the load, then kudos to you! If you're on your own, then you know how this is going down.

Okay, is anyone else super cooky about carrying in all the grocery bags at once, or is it just me? My personal best is 23 bags at one time. Crazy, right? So you want to know how I pulled off this feat? Okay, here's my strategy and I'm giving you this for free. Because we're friends. First, I slide the bags up to the end of my elbow, followed by the forearm. These are the lightest bags. If they're too heavy, my circulation will cut off and I may pass out before I get to the front door. Not to mention I may end up with zebra stripes from the bags digging into my arms. In either case, not good. Besides, there is absolutely no setting down bags to readjust. (There's no crying in baseball!) The heaviest bags then go in my hands; balancing the weight of those bags between both hands, lest I topple over.  Again, not good. Now here's the most important thing. Please have the keys out before you load up. Ask me how I know? The name of the game is that everything gets carried in on the first haul. Now I don't know what that says about the human psyche (or me) but it is what it is. Anywho, back to eco-friendliness.
